We captured our first tornado for the season practically in our own back yard, on April 23, 2008 near Ackerly, TX (between Lubbock and Big Spring, TX) and for the first time in Lubbock television history, was able to stream a live tornado to the air, as we were chasing for KCBD NewsChannel 11.

Our friend and weekend meteorologst at the station, Carey Allen, was chasing another storm to the north in Lamesa, TX and intercepted some giant baseball sized hail, causing extensive damage to the stations storm chase vehicle. We were able to come back behind that storm and get some of the hail on the ground, which had been laying on the ground about 30 minutes at the point this picture was taken, so it was indeed much larger than this when it fell.

We covered our chase with regular updates from the field in my blog, IN THE VORTEX. Be sure to visit there and subscribe to get the latest updates on forecast chases and in depth looks at severe weather events across the country. Also don't forget you can watch our storm chases LIVE on chase days, by visiting the LIVE ChaseCam page.
