  • Verne Carlson – The Flying Monkey

As I have mentioned, while at the 2010 National Storm Chaser Convention, I interviewed a number of storm chasers and vendors that were in attendance and let them tell us what they had going on.  Here is Verne Carlson telling us about his very cool RC Helicopter called the “Flying Monkey” that carries around a nice HD camera and can stream live video!  He also has RC planes he calls the “Wicked Witch”.  Both of course references to the historic movie “The Wizard of Oz” that no doubt most storm chasers watched as children to see the tornado (and some of us still do).  I have many more interviews to come!

    2009chaserconvention

This past weekend I attended the 11th Annual National Storm Chaser convention. You have probably seen me mention this before, as I handle the website and internet promotions for it.  It’s the great premier weather event designed specifically for storm chasers.

While I was a bit tired from the drive up to Denver, Colorado I had a great time.  There were plenty of interesting talks going on. I particularly enjoyed the presentations by Jon Davies and Rich Thompson from the Storm Prediction Center.   No matter how long you have been storm chasing, you can still learn something new!

There were plenty of  vendors on hands too, from the more media related chasers, like TVN to individual chasers.  Everything from tons of DVD, to tshirts, to mounted photos was available.  Even some commercial vendoes like Baron were on hand.  You could definitely spend a lot of money on weather/chasing stuff in a short period of time!

The best part was getting to hang out with some old friends, and make some new ones, while not under the constraints of a chase day, which is how it often happens.  It’s really growing into a true convention as well in terms of the networking that goes on among people.  I was able to visit with the TVN guys a lot more about things that are in the works and I am very excited to be a part of that! (more on that later…)

It’s going to be a great chasing year!
